Vaccines protect pets from a variety of fatal conditions such as rabies. If you’d like to learn more about vaccines and which ones are right for your pet, it’s wise to speak with a veterinarian. At Summit Veterinary Hospital, we have been providing residents of Los Gatos with reliable veterinary services for many years. This includes pet vaccinations.

Importance of Pet Vaccinations

Vaccines can protect your pets from diseases before they ever contract said disease. A vaccine primes your pet’s immune system. If a virus or other microbe enters your pet’s body, the immune system will already know how to fight it. Following vaccination, your pet’s immune system can often stop the microbe dead in its tracks.

Some diseases can only be avoided through vaccination. If your pet contracts rabies, for example, and is either not vaccinated or does not get vaccinated immediately, the condition will almost certainly kill your pet. Most pets who get the rabies vaccine and subsequent booster shots will never contract the disease in the first place even if they are exposed. Rabies can also spread to humans and other pets. Vaccinating your pet against rabies is not only essential for protecting your pet, but also for protecting other pets and pet owners in your community.

Core and Non-Core Vaccines

Vaccines are typically broken into core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are essential and sometimes even required by law, while non-core vaccines will be recommended based on environmental factors. Core dog vaccines include Parvovirus, Distemper, and Adenovirus-2. Core feline pet vaccinations include Herpesvirus 1, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia.

Whether or not your pet should receive non-core vaccines depends on the diseases that are common in your area and your pet’s lifestyle. For example, if your cat or dog spends time around other pets, our vet may recommend that your pet get influenza vaccines.
